Maenads and nymphs, followers of Bacchus, god of wine. The motifs are instantly familiar:
the bacchante, grape-enamoured and ruddy cheeked, tendrils in her open hair; the casual drapes and folds that expose naked arms and shoulders. In concealing and revealing, the painting proclaims the pleasures of the flesh and the world. Artfully, the god of the soil unveils his treasures. Convivial bacchanals celebrate the opening of the casks, raising their voices in praise of the grapes, the wine, the aromas.
